So…..this is what a MRSA Staph infection in my throat and my lungs, and the resulting 15 pound weight loss from being so sick looks like….
The one on the left was taken today and the one on the right was taken a couple of months ago.
I don’t know exactly when or how I got MRSA, but I have a feeling chocolate milk was somehow involved. I choked last month and saw 3 of my doctors after I choked, but they missed it for almost 2 weeks because I a)don’t have an immune system, b)I don’t get fevers, and c)the only (and biggest) clue was a pulse that liked to hover around 110-120 bpm. So I had to wait for a culture.
I still don’t have a voice….or rather it shows up when and if it feels like it. But I think I have at least quit losing weight and I’m about halfway through my antibiotics.
I have been over this and over this in my head and researched how one goes about getting something so serious so quickly. It seems there are about 94,360 invasive MRSA infections diagnosed in the US each year, with about 18,650 associated deaths. Those of us with chronic illnesses and compromised immune systems are at a higher risk.
The scary thing for me is that I have an artificial hip joint, an inoperable brain tumor, a compromised immune system due to radiation for said brain tumor, and a calcium granuloma in lungs that have already survived pneumonia. Clearly I am nothing if not a fighter and a survivor, but this year seems to be pretty rough if you have a chronic or serious illness. We’ve lost a lot of people.
So I’m fighting, and I’m surviving. But this sucks.
